Ventana Canyon 501

Tucson, Arizona

Desert sensitivity and spatial relations find balance with the owner's desire to follow their Indian tradition of Vastu Shastra. According to Vastu Shastra, the five basic elements (earth, wind, fire, water, and space) should be arranged to influence the patterns of everyday life. These elements are incorporated into the dwelling through the use of the open courtyard. Courtyards are common in vernacular desert architecture as well as arid regions of India. The courtyard brings the elements of Vastu into all parts of the residence. It acts as an organizing function around an open space, as a modifier of climate, and a space for social gathering. The courtyard allows for natural light and ventilation and acts as a lung of the house while providing views from every room.

The home was designed with a modernist spirit, which blends traditional values and modern architecture. The use of clean lines creates a house with an interesting visual appeal that seeks to differentiate itself from conventional desert architecture.
